11 Bit Studios has unveiled their next installment in the Frostpunk series, Frostpunk 1886.
This new title is a massive step forward for the studio as they are developing this game from the ground-up using the Unreal Engine. And the devs are promising this new title will be a fresh experience for all players, both new and veterans.
Up until now, Frostpunk was developed using the 11 Bit Studios’ own Liquid Engine. It seems like the devs have decided to stop the development of Liquid Engine and adapt the Unreal Engine for the Frostpunk series moving forward.
Thanks to this shift, the developers will be able to introduce more content and DLCs much more quickly for future titles. As well as adding MOD support.
“Reimagining Frostpunk in Unreal Engine also allows the game to become a living, expandable platform, bringing with it long-awaited mod support—a community request that was previously impossible to realize due to technical limitations of the original engine—as well as the possibility to add future DLC content.”
According to the press release, Frostpunk 1886 will build upon the core gameplay system of the original game, which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed.

Frostpunk 1886 is set for release in 2027.
That’s a long way to go. But until then, we will have lots of Frostpunk 2 content to enjoy along the way.
