In 2026, the most unexpected return of The Division 2 happened during the 10th anniversary of the franchise.
It’s been 10 years since the release of the first The Division game and The Division 2 is now seven years old.
During this anniversary celebration, The Division 2 was heavily discounted on Steam, and as a result, the player numbers for the game skyrocketed.
The active player count went from 4,000 to 27,000, which was the all-time high since the game launched on Steam.

And it’s not just because of the game’s discount. It’s also because Ubisoft has decided to bring the franchise back from the dead.
In April 2026, The Division 2 received a massive content drop featuring a brand new mode called Realism Mode, which made the game a bit more realistic and feel more like an actual extraction shooter.
Additionally, a special season pass was introduced for the anniversary celebration, packed with awesome loot. A series of events was also included during this period.
Needless to say, it was an impressive offering for a 7-year-old game, and it tempted most of the playerbase to return to the game, including myself.
The good news is, even after this anniversary event ended, the active player count is still holding strong. And it seems like The Division 2’s future is looking bright.
Massive and Ubisoft are planning a lot of new content for The Division 2 in 2026:
- PvP balancing and content updates
- Expanded crossplay across consoles and PC
- One new Incursion
- New Classified Assignments
- Closed testing has begun for Survivors, with more tests planned
Also, a new DLC located in Central Park is also planned to be released later in 2026.
In between all these improvements and content, brand new events will also take place.

Like the new Cherry Blossom event that brought back Kitsunebi and Ronin attacks, new caches, a community challenge, and more to the game.
Let’s not forget, the new “Experimental Gear” is also available in the game right now for veteran players who wants a bit more of a challenge.
Needless to say, The Division 2 is still going strong even after all these years and I’m beyond excited to return to the game.
