is destiny 2 dead

There’s no sugarcoating it: Destiny 2 is in a rough spot right now. And the game is at a critical junction that could define what the future holds for this game.

Ever since Sony acquired Bungie, the developer has been delivering disappointing content drops and expansions, one after another. It’s as if they have completely stopped listening to the players altogether.

Right now, there’s strong chatter surrounding the game’s stability and the rapid decline of the player base. Everyone’s claiming Destiny 2 is dead.

But is it really dead? Is there a chance to recover from this downfall?

The Current State of Destiny 2

In June 2024, Destiny 2 had a pivotal moment after launching The Final Shape expansion. The game had a massive surge in active players, reaching more than 300k players returning to the game.

But, within a month, this player count had dropped to 100k. Over the next few months, the game’s active player count declined rapidly.

As of May 2026, the peak active player count is at just around 11k. A massive downfall for once one of the greatest looter-shooters out there.

Bungie’s new title, Marathon, is to blame for most of this travesty. They had to allocate most of their developer teams to work on the new title. And it also turned out to be a disappointing launch. Even though it’s not an excuse for the developer to almost completely abandon its biggest money-maker.

Players are leaving the game from left to right, while its most loyal content creators are also criticising the game’s development or the lack of it.

In the middle of all this, Bungie recently delayed its newest content update, Shadow and Order. Things are not looking good.

My Return To Destiny 2

While all of this is happening, I decided to return to the game and check it out.

Destiny 2 was one of my favorite looter-shooters and I played every expansion of the game until Witch Queen. After Witch Queen, I took a long break from the game and did not touch it since, which was back in 2022.

Then I saw that all of the Destiny 2 expansions were on sale for about $20 dollars on Humble Bundle. Regardless of the quality of the expansions, this was a massive bargain. So grabbed all the expansions and jumped into the game to continue the story.

Surprisingly enough, the watch tower is still as populated as ever and even though I started playing from the Lightfall campaign, I still came across dozens of high-level players actively participating in Strikes and public events.

I mostly play Destiny 2 for the story campaigns and then to grind for the exotics. So I’m still enjoying my ride through the main campaign storyline.

The story itself was a bit mid and feels flat, but overall I’ve enjoyed it.

Then I started wondering what everyone is actually complaining about.

The Actual Problem

I’m not going to turn a blind eye to all the issues with Destiny 2 right now. The game is going through a serious content drought, the lack of support from the developer is real, the lack of good raids, the lack of developer updates, and the lack of content to look forward to is a serious issue. And I totally understand why players are blaming the developer and leaving the game. They are just tired of waiting.

But I also see a major problem with this game’s community. Especially some of the most popular streamers and content creators are criticizing the game in a very negative and unfair way.

The streamers and YouTubers, who have been playing the game like a day job for 12 hours per day for seven days a week, are now complaining that the game is boring. I mean, what do you expect after putting 10k hours into the game?

These streamers are like a curse to most game development, which keeps infecting every community they jump into.

They often forget that most people who play Destiny 2 are casual players who usually login to put in two or three hours and logout. Some of them only play on weekends.

And by creating doomer YouTube videos criticising the current state of the game, they are making these casual players feel bad for progressing in the game.

I know this from personal experience. I’ve watched countless videos before actually buying the expansions on sale because I wasn’t sure if the game is even worth spending $20 right now.

But after actually trying the game, I’m enjoying it. Sure it doesn’t feel like old-school Destiny 2 anymore, but it’s still fun to run around doing random activities, chase exotics, and grind for gear.

Is Destiny 2 Dead?

The game is still fun, and for casual players, Destiny 2 has lots of content to play for hours, especially if you manage to grab the expansions on sale.

But Bungie should seriously consider their next expansion and they need to deliver lots of quality-of-life improvements to balance the game to bring it back to a normal state.

Right now, the player base is divided and so the developer need to find a way to offer an experience that unites all players together.

And for the love of god, stop focusing on so many microtransactions and stupid Fortnite skins. Focus on creating stuff that players actually want.

So, do I think Destiny 2 is dead? No, at least not yet. There’s still hope!
