best realistic FPS games

There’s something about realistic FPS games that gets you fully immersed in the world, making you feel like a total badass.

This list is all about those games. You’ll find some of my favorite realistic FPS games with high-quality visuals, guns that feel real, and gameplay that gets you to play every day.

And you’ll be happy to know that there aren’t any Call of Duty or Battlefield titles on this list. Some of these are games like Call of Duty, only without the sweaty tryhards and microtransactions.

Jump right in and see for yourself.

1. Gray Zone Warfare

gray zone warfare how to attach acog

Gray Zone Warfare is by far the most realistic FPS available right now. It’s a military simulator-style game that takes you to a fictitious land inspired by Vietnam.

GZW not only has realistic graphics built on Unreal Engine 5, it also has the most advanced gun customization system with deep mechanics. You can literally build a custom gun from scratch in this game.

GZW plays a lot like an extraction shooter, but it has a PvE-only mode for solo players where you can even go back after death to retrieve your equipment. It also has MMO vibes where other players can also roam around the map alongside you.

Guns feel punchy and realistic with degrading mechanics. You can equip your own custom ammo types when tackling different types of enemies.

This is a game made specifically for hardcore FPS fans who appreciate realism as well as engaging gameplay.

2. Ready or Not

ready or not

Ready or Not is a SWAT-style tactical shooter that features both solo and co-op gameplay. In this game, you can control your own AI SWAT team to do missions as a team leader.

There are multiple types of missions in Ready or Not, including hostage rescue, bomb defusal, taking down terrorists, and more. Each mission takes you to a different location with multiple entry points that will feel different in every run. Tactical movements and strategy is key to winning in this game.

In terms of visuals, Ready or Not looks stunning. Gunplay is also realistic and punchy. You can also customize your guns and loadout for different missions. But weapon customization is not as deep as games like GZW.

3. Witchfire

witchfire

Witchfire is one of the hidden gems that deserves so much attention than it’s got. This game has some of the most stunning visuals I’ve seen, and it comes loaded with an incredible set of weapons with special abilities.

Witchfire is a fantasy-style looter shooter. But I felt it to be more like a soulslike FPS with cool loot. In this game, you enter a map to farm resources and complete missions, and then extract with what you have. If you die, you lose everything. But, much like in GZW, you can go back to retrieve some of it.

Witchfire has great progression system that lets you work towards unlocking better weapons and gear. Each weapon has special abilities that you can also unlock and upgrade.

The coolest thing about this game is its loading time. It takes less than a second to load into the game after clicking on the icon.

4. Doom: The Dark Ages

doom dark ages

Every Doom game is a great FPS game. But I think Dark Ages is the peak of Doom, for several reasons.

I especially liked the setting and the vibe of Dark Ages. It felt like an homage to the original Doom titles. In this game, you also get to take enemies head-on with up-close and personal combat mechanics, like the use of the shield-saw, which felt totally badass to use every time.

Combat mechanics are phenomenal in Dark Ages, and the set of weapons in the game complements that quite well.

Doom: The Dark Ages is a great FPS in every aspect of the game. Only criticism I have of the game is that it needs more DLCs and content.

5. Incursion: Red River

incursion red river update

Incursion: Red River is my second most favorite mil-sim shooter, right after Gray Zone Warfare. The only reason I ranked it a bit lower here is because the game is a bit janky right now. But with the upcoming updates, I will consider moving it up.

Incursion: Red River is very similar to GZW in many ways. However, while GZW only has one massive map, Incursion: Red River has multiple maps with different settings to explore.

This game also has deep weapon customization, good loot, missions, good AI enemies, and impactful, weighty gunplay. In terms of graphics, this game also runs in Unreal Engine 5, so the visuals are highly realistic.

6. Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 cover

I recommend Cyberpunk 2077 in every chance I get because it’s not a game, it’s an absolutely cinema experience.

Cyberpunk 2077 features some of the best graphics and visuals in any FPS game ever made. It has every type of graphical technology, including Nvidia Path Tracing, that makes the game good mindblowingly stunning. Especially the futuristic, neon-drenched world is something that makes you awe in wonder in each turn.

This game also has highly advanced gunplay and weapon mechanics. It has weapons with target-seeking bullets, rifles, revolvers, shotguns, and any gun you can name. And it has a little bit of weapon customization too.

I have played Cyberpunk 2077 multiple times from start to finish and I still don’t feel like I’m done with this game.

7. STALKER 2

STALKER 2

STALKER 2 is another fantastic game with highly realistic graphics powered by Unreal Engine 5. It has a strange, post-apocalyptic world full of anomalies and weird creatures.

This game is quite difficult to play for those of you who are new to the STALKER franchise. It has a sort of survival element built into it. The visuals though, look fantastic and the world is also highly immersive.

STALKER 2 has decent weapon customization with the ability to equip different scopes, magazines, and silencers. Gunplay feels good but not as realistic as games like GZW.

If you’re up for a challenge and a more hardcore experience, I highly recommend checking out STALKER GAMMA. It’s free, by the way.

8. Titanfall 2

Titanfall 2

Titanfall 2 is well-known for its mecha-riding, time-bending mechanics. And of course, the awesome single-player campaign. But this game also has some of the best gunplay in the FPS genre.

There’s a reason why almost 2,000 gamers still play Titanfall 2 daily after more than 10 years of its release. It’s because this game has quite engaging FPS mechanics combined with a mecha-riding system that is still unmatched by any other game.

Titanfall 2’s campaign is legendary. It features immersive gameplay with a cool time-bending mechanic that blew me away when I first played it. This game still holds up in terms of gameplay and graphics.

9. Metro: Exodus

metro exodus

I loved all the unique weapons in Metro: Exodus. The Tihar, aka the air gun, specifically, is a cool weapon that’s iconic to the Metro series. The way that gun works and how you have to craft ammo is what made this game so immersive.

Metro: Exodus also features incredibly advanced graphics. It was among the first games to get enhanced editing with ray tracing graphics. And it still holds up.

Much like all Metro games, Exodus also has a set of unique and powerful weapons. And it has a unique world with such a bleak and depressing environment that you will feel like you’re actually in the game.

The first time I played the game, I stopped playing because I felt completely depressed by playing it. But I’m glad I went back to it after a while.

10. Delta Force

Delta Force

Delta Force is a game full of quirky skins and operators who has special abilities, so how come it gets a spot on this list? Because it’s a damn good FPS that’s free-to-play!

Delta Force has two main game modes: Operations and Warfare. In Warfare, you get to participate in all-out war with up to 100 players, just like in Battlefield. Operations is a lot like an extraction shooter mode.

Both game modes have solid graphics and gunplay that’s similar to Call of Duty. Weapon customization is also quite decent, not deep but good enough.

I’ve spent quite a lot of time playing the Operations mode in Delta Force as a free-to-play player and enjoyed it a lot. I still can’t believe this game is free.

11. RoboCop: Rogue City

RoboCop rogue city

RoboCop: Rogue City may seem like an odd choice for this list but trust me it has really good gunplay and physics.

If you’re familiar with RoboCop, you already know what to expect from this game. It basically lets you roleplay as the iconic 80s action hero. And he comes loaded with his iconic sidearm that can shoot bursts.

I actually didn’t expect RoboCop: Rogue City to be this good. It surprised me with the cool gunplay that makes you feel overpowered. And the campaign is also quite good.

This is a must-play for 80s and 90s kids. Even though it’s not the most realistic FPS, you’ll have a blast playing it.

12. Arena Breakout Infinite

arena breakout infinite

This game gets a lot of hate for being a cheap knockoff of Escape from Tarkov, but in reality, Arena Breakout actually feels a lot like an upgrade, especially thanks to its high-quality, realistic visuals.

ABI is an extraction shooter that feels and plays a lot like Tarkov. This game, however, is free-to-play. There’s no pay-to-win but it does have a lot of microtransactions. And it often runs events and collabs that bring in weird skins and game modes, like zombie modes.

If you enjoy that type of game, ABI is a great game that offers good gunplay and weapon customization with a fair amount of realism.
