best life simulation games

I always loved playing life simulator games because there’s no better feeling than playing god and being in control of your virtual characters.

And I meant that in a good way because after spending a day working hard for someone else and managing real life, it’s just fun and relaxing to be in control of life for a change.

In this list, I’m highlighting some of the best life simulator games where you can live a second life. It’s a mix of my favorite life sims and some of my wife’s favorite games.

There are some popular and obvious titles in this list, but trust me, you’ll find a lot more hidden gems and new life simulator games that you haven’t even heard of. Check them all out below.

1. InZOI

inZOI

Right now, InZOI is the best life sim available and even surpasses Sims 4 in terms of quality and gameplay. InZOI comes with close to realistic graphics, an immersive 3D world, and engaging gameplay mechanics.

InZOI features a beautiful and highly detailed city with locations inspired by real-life places. The game does a great job of allowing you to create a truly personalized world.

You can even upload your own videos and images to create 3D in-game objects or character motions.

The character creator itself lets you dive deep into creating an identical version of yourself or even create characters of your wildest imagination, as it comes loaded with 250 different settings.

InZOI is the only life simulation game on this list that allows this level of customization and personalization with in-game settings.

2. Paralives

Paralives

Paralives is a new life simulator game that is also still in early access. Featuring a creatively unique art style, this game focuses on creating an ideal life for your characters by building a home, pursuing a career, and managing relationships.

Cultivating friendships and romantic relationships is a major part of Paralives’ gameplay loop. It also has a highly detailed character creator as well.

Building and customizing your house is the biggest part of this game. So if you’re looking for a game to create a second home for yourself, Paralives offers plenty of tools to design your ideal second home.

3. Sims 4

sims 4

After all these years, Sims 4 is still the king of life sim games, thanks to its quirky and casual gameplay vibes. Sims 4 still offers the perfect combination of life simulation mechanics that delivers a well-balanced experience to players. And that’s why it’s so popular.

Sims 4 gives you various ways to enjoy the game. In a way, it offers a sandbox-style environment for you to control your characters any way you want and create different paths for them to progress on.

The game also provides highly engaging aspects like controlling the career paths and family life of your Sims to take them toward specific goals.

What makes me reluctant to recommend this game is its price. With all the DLCs, Sims 4 could cost over $1600. Even during sales, the game is ridiculously expensive. The good side is that the base game is now free. You can still enjoy a fair amount of gameplay out of the base game.

4. Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley may not be as flashy as Sims 4 or have realistic graphics like InZOI, but it offers the best gameplay experience of both those games combined.

The cozy vibes blended with the beautiful music and pixel art graphics of Stardew Valley are something that can’t be compared with even the highest-budget triple-A games.

In Stardew Valley, you get to build your own farm, grow crops, upgrade your house, build relationships with NPCs, explore dungeons, go fishing, and do so many other things. And it’s all packed into a tiny game that is less than 1GB in size.

I love Stardew Valley so much that I own this game on four different platforms. I own it on PC, mobile, PlayStation, and Switch. And I have different saves across each platform where I try to live different lives. If that doesn’t tell you how good this game really is, I don’t know what will.

5. Coral Island

Coral Island

Coral Island has a similar vibe to Stardew Valley but with modern and 3D-style visuals. The game still uses an isometric style view but with its own unique spin on the gameplay.

Diversity takes center stage in this game. It has all kinds of characters, 75 to be exact, with different personalities and ethnicities. And you can build relationships and date 25 of them.

Coral Island takes place on a beautiful tropical island, which you get to help build and grow bigger. It has farming, questing, mining in caves, and even diving in the ocean.

Coral Island is ideal for those of you who enjoy a blend of farming and life simulation like in Stardew but also prefer modern graphics.

6. Nivalis Nights

Nivalis Nights

Nivalis Nights is a new game that comes with a unique take on the whole life simulation genre.

First of all, this game takes place in a stunning cyberpunk-themed city full of neon lights and flying cars. While the game features low-poly style graphics, it does not impact the immersiveness of the world. You can walk through the futuristic streets and still be amazed by how gorgeous they look.

Nivalis Nights is a different kind of life sim. This game blends life simulation with business simulation mechanics where you have to manage both your life and businesses to survive and thrive in the cyberpunk city.

7. Medieval Dynasty

Medieval Dynasty romance

If you’re tired of all the modern life sim games or sometimes you could live in the good old medieval times, then this game is perfect for you.

Medieval Dynasty is a life sim game that takes place in, well, you guessed it, medieval times. It features the same gameplay loop as other games, including farming, questing, and rebuilding your village. Except, you’ll be doing all that in first-person view.

This game is highly immersive and has building and combat mechanics that will instantly get you addicted to the game. Medieval Dynasty also features unique mechanics. One of which is your ability to get married, have children, and when you die, you can continue playing as your children. In a way, this game doesn’t have an end.

8. Tales of the Shire

Tales of the Shire

This is a hidden gem that I guarantee you haven’t heard about. Tales of the Shire is a wonderful simulation game where you get to live the lives of the hobbits from Lord of the Rings.

It’s a beautifully designed, cozy, and cute life sim game that is ideal for fans of the Lord of the Rings universe. You get to farm, fish, and decorate your tiny Hobbit house however you like as you progress through the game.

Cooking food is a big part of this game, as Hobbits are well-known for their food and cooking skills. Thankfully, you don’t have to worry about the ring or Sauron in this game. It’s all about having a chill, relaxing time in the Shire.

9. Palia

Palia

Palia is a free-to-play farming/life sim that features cartoon-style visuals. It’s also an online multiplayer game that works similarly to an MMO. That means you will see other players running around in the town doing their work.

Palia is inspired by games like Stardew Valley. So, you can expect to see the same gameplay mechanics in this one, including farming, crafting, rebuilding the town, managing relationships, and all the good stuff.

Since the game is free, you can definitely try this game and see if it’s worth playing. My wife enjoyed a few dozen hours in this game before going back to her usual Stardew Valley grind.

10. My Time at Sandrock

My Time At Sandrock

My Time at Sandrock is another cozy and cute game that blends life simulation with farming and crafting. It features 3D graphics with third-person view gameplay.

My Time at Sandrock is the sequel to the popular title, My Time at Portia. This one takes place in a desert-themed environment with lots of additional gameplay mechanics.

In addition to all the basics like farming, questing, and fighting creatures, you also get to experience even more engaging NPC stories, new mini-games, and more new ways to expand and grow your workshop.

11. Big Ambitions

Big Ambitions

Big Ambitions is mainly a business simulation game, but it also has life simulation aspects that make it a great candidate for this list.

The game features a top-down view with deep business management mechanics. It takes place in a busy urban map inspired by New York. You start from scratch doing ordinary jobs and slowly build your own business empire.

Big Ambitions is a lot like a sandbox simulation game that offers an immersive experience. When you need something, like food, you need to go all the way to the supermarket to buy it. The food doesn’t magically appear in the fridge like in most other life sim games.

12. Moonlight Peaks

Moonlight Peaks

Moonlight Peaks is one of the newest games that was released recently. This game takes on the whole life sim genre with a unique sim.

In this game, you play in a magical town where you play the role of a vampire. So, you don’t grow the usual crops and craft the ordinary food in this game. Instead, you grow unique crops to craft potions and magical elixirs.

The characters and NPCs you meet will also have unique personalities. And of course, most of the game will take place at night, for obvious reasons.

Despite the dark(ish) theme, Moonlight Peaks has a cute and cozy vibe.
