games where you play as a monster

If you’re bored of playing the same kind of FPS and RPGs where you play as a human, then this list is for you.

In this list, I’m showcasing some of the best games where you play as a monster or a creature for a change. These are quite different from horror games with zombies and creatures.

Most of these games are bloody violent and let you turn into a monster that just obliterates enemies. And there are a couple of games where you get to play as good kinds of monsters too.

So, whether you want to destroy humans as a monster or just be a good monster, there are some fun games in this list for all types of monster fans. Check em out.

1. Werewolf: The Apocalypse

Werewolf The Apocalypse

This is a hidden gem kind of a game that went unnoticed at release back in 2022. In this game, you get to play as a human, a wolf, and a massive werewolf-like creature that completely destroys everything in its path.

Werewolf: The Apocalypse is the best game you can find in the “games where you play as a monster” genre, because it ticks all the right boxes of the perfect monster game.

You can transform into a wolf for the stealth gameplay and sneak around. And as a human, you can talk to NPCs and interact with objects. And then as a werewolf, you get to just rip enemies apart like paper.

2. Bloodlines 2

vampire bloodlines 2

If your fantasy is to play as a vampire, then look no further than the Vampire: The Masquerade series.

The first game in the series was one of the best vampire games ever made. I highly recommend you start with that one. And then there are some sequels and prequels you can jump into as you like.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is the latest in the series that just came out in 2025. This game was not what the players expected and received a lot of criticism for being a mediocre title.

But it can be fun if you only want to play as a vampire and feed on humans. While the game features a poor story and RPG elements, the combat and vampire-themed elements are quite good.

3. Styx

Styx

Styx is a popular franchise that has survived decades as one of the rare and great monster-themed video game series. Styx: Master of Shadows is a masterclass on crafting impactful stealth gameplay while blending with RPG elements.

In Styx, you play as a goblin who is on a mission to steal and assassinate humans and elves for the good of his own well-being.

The entire game features stealth-based gameplay with missions that give you complete freedom to make up your own path as you sneak your way through obstacles and enemies.

This is one of the few monster games where you get to play as a monster without needing to be barbaric or rip people to shreds.

4. Dying Light

dying light night hunter

Dying Light is mainly a zombie apocalypse game where you play as a human trying to survive the apocalypse. But, the game also has a very cool, separate game mode called The Night Hunter where you play as a mutated, super-powered zombie.

In this game mode, your goal is to hunt people who are trying to destroy your nests. Basically, you become a zombie monster who can run super fast and just obliterate humans with your bare hands and claws.

There’s also a 4v1 co-op game mode in Dying Light called Be the Zombie where you can play the zombie that goes around hunting the 4 survivors. It’s sort of like Dead by Daylight.

5. Dead by Daylight

dead by daylight

Dead by Daylight is an online co-op game where you get to play out your serial killer fantasy.

In this game, you can play together with your friends as a survivor who has to run, hide, and survive from a killer. Or you can play as the killer who hunts down the survivors. And that’s the most fun part of the game.

Dead by Daylight features some of the most brutal killers inspired by popular movie franchises, urban legends, and more. While most of these killer characters are humans, they are actually monsters who are even more dangerous than monstrous creatures.

6. Destroy All Humans

Destroy All Humans is one of my favorites and the funniest games of all time. In this game, you play as an alien on a mission to take over the Earth.

So, technically, you’re not a monster in this game. But based on the stuff this alien does to humans, I think it’s safe to categorize it as a monster.

Both Destroy All Humans 1 and 2 are fantastic and fun games where you get to play an alien. You get to probe and brainwash humans, take control of political figures to do your bidding, and even get on your UFO and destroy entire cities with alien weapons.

7. Prototype 2

prototype 2

Prototype 2 is another classic horror game from the 2012. It definitely shows its age and probably won’t run as smoothly on modern PCs. But it’s a great title.

In this game, you play as a mutating human who’s slowly turning into a monster, created by a weird experiment gone wrong. Basically, you’re becoming a weapon!

The game features a great combination of engaging gameplay and a story campaign with a variety of missions.

Prototype 2 feels a lot like an anti-superhero game because as this human/monster, you get to climb buildings, jump off them and fly around, destroy enemies with superhuman powers, and so much more.

8. Skyrim / ESO

skyrim werewolf

Skyrim is still one of the best RPGs available today, especially thanks to its widely popular modding scene. Thanks to mods, you can completely transform this game into anything you want.

Even without any mods, you can easily role-play a werewolf in Skyrim by completing The Silver Hand quest you get from The Companions faction. This allows you to transform into a werewolf anytime you need.

You can also become a werewolf in Elder Scrolls Online. ESO is much bigger and updated than Skyrim and has tons more content to experience spanning all regions of the Elder Scrolls franchise.

9. Baldur’s Gate 3

baldurs gate 3 dragonborn

Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the best CRPGs for roleplaying. There are several different races you can play as in BG3, one of them is Dragonborn, which is basically a hybrid between humans and dragons.

You can play the entire game while roleplaying as Dragonborn and you can even choose to play good or evil as well.

There are also half-orc and Tiefling races, which also resemble creature-like features for roleplaying as a monster in BG3.

10. The Eternal Cylinder

The Eternal Cylinder

Eternal Cylinder is another monster-themed game with a completely different kind of vibe. This is not a violent or terrifying game; instead, it offers a unique experience through a beautiful story campaign.

In this game, you play as a tiny creature who can adapt new skills to survive in a weird world full of giant monsters. You must navigate strange terrains, solve puzzles, and save other creatures in your journey.

This game may look like a kids’ game, but the creature you’re playing and the surrounding environments look quite terrifying. So it’s perfect for fans of monster-themed games, without too much violence.

11. Of Orcs And Men

Of Orcs And Men

Of Orcs And Men is a slightly older game on our list. It’s been over a decade since the release of this game in 2012. However, it’s also a solid monster-themed game where you play as an orc.

In Of Orcs And Men, you get thrown into a war between of humans and orcs and goblins. As a beast of an Orc and a Goblin warrior, your mission is to get into human camps and kill the emperor to save your kind.

The combat and gameplay of this game will feel slightly outdated, but it’s worth checking out for the mission variety and the campaign.

12. CARRION

CARRION

CARRION is a classic pixel-style 2D platformer where you play as an amorphous monster who’s on a mission to consume everyone on its path to revenge. And as you consume more humans, you grow bigger and angrier.

Carrion is a small yet unique game that delivers a memorable experience. This game is perfect for enjoying on the Steam Deck.

Bonus: Halloween: The Game

Halloween The Game

A new Halloween video game, based on the 1978 film, is also on the way. It’s a single-player game with stunning graphics where you get to live out the Michael Myers fantasy. It’s coming in September 2026.
