The horror game genre is finally getting the attention it deserves. We have some incredible new titles coming this year as well as through next year.

In this list, I wanted to highlight some of the best upcoming horror games that deserve your attention.

There are a few brand new horror games as well as sequels to your favorite franchises coming in the next few months.

The horror game genre is difficult to define, as it often gets misused to promote games that don’t even qualify as horror. Especially the horror category on major game marketplaces like Steam and Epic Games is riddled with low-quality titles.

So, for this list, I made sure to pick only the titles that would definitely send chills down your spine.

1. Halloween: The Game

Inspired by the classic 1978 movie, Halloween: The Game is coming out in just a couple of months, and from the looks of the gameplay footage, it will offer a very enjoyable experience to horror addicts.

The game features both multiplayer and single player modes. In the multiplayer mode, you will be able to either hunt players as Michael or be one of the survivors.

The single player mode has a story campaign where you get to live the events of the classic horror movie through the eyes of Michael Myers.

2. SILENT HILL: Townfall

Another new Silent Hill game is also coming out in September, and it’s looking much darker and cinematic than the previous games.

The story takes place on a mysterious island called St. Amelia where you must explore and survive the horrors that await you using the limited tools available to you.

Townfall is a first-person game with stunning graphics that sends you back to 1996 Scotland with unique atmospheric vibes and a fog-filled village full of horrors.

3. Resident Evil: Veronica

The remake of Resident Evil Code: Veronica from 2000 is one of the most anticipated titles in 2017, not just for horror fans but by all gamers.

The early gameplay reveals showed how detailed and visually stunning the remake looks and it adds more to the immersion of the game.

You will be playing as Claire Redfield to search for her brother in this suspense-filled survival horror title.

4. ILL

ILL

  • Release Date: 2027

ILL is a new horror game that aims to shake up the genre with its gore-filled, gruesome gameplay mechanics.

ILL features first-person action horror vibes with bloody and spooky fort filled with weird creatures and monsters. Chilling body horror with realistic physics takes center stage in this game.

In ILL, you get to wield some cool and classic weapons, like shotguns and revolvers, to blast monsters’ heads off their bodies.

5. The Sinking City 2

The highly anticipated sequel to the popular horror game, The Sinking City 2 comes with fully upgraded visuals that will fully immerse you in its Lovecraftian world.

This new third-person horror title takes you to a gloomy city of Arkham, New England in the 1920s. It has stunning environments filled with its unique art style, as well as scary horrors in every corner that are waiting to get you.

If you haven’t played the first game, now is the perfect time to try it before diving into the sequel, as it’s been remastered with new lighting and textures.

6. Metro: 2039

The Metro series may not be fully qualified to be in the horror genre, but it has all the right elements to be one of the best survival horror franchises available right now.

The latest title in the series, Metro: 2039, takes you back to the sewers where all the creepy and scary horrors started. This new title looks much scarier and darker than any of its previous games.

I highly recommend you play the first three Metro games in preparation for this new title. They are all incredibly well-made games.

7. ONTOS

ONTOS is a very unique and different kind of horror experience that comes from the developers of Amnesia and SOMA.

ONTOS is a sci-fi horror game where you visit a hotel on the moon to uncover a deep, dark mystery. As you explore, you encounter secrets about your father and weird experiments that will send shivers down your spine.

Gameplay of this game centers around exploration, solving puzzles, and planning ahead. An exact release date for ONTOS hasn’t been revealed yet, but it’s expected to come out in 2027.

8. From Devil’s Womb

From Devil’s Womb is a unique psychological horror title coming from an indie studio, featuring a creative and creepy VHS-Inspired art style.

In this game, you take the role of an ex-police officer trying to solve the case of his missing partner. All the clues and puzzles take you to a weird and scary location, with nothing but a lighter to guide you through the darkness.

It’s small indie games like these that keep the horror genre alive with unique experiences that defy the norms.

9. Silver Pines

Silver Pines shows a lot of similarities to shows like Twin Peaks and Wayward Pines. It tells the story of a private investigator visiting a remote town looking for a missing person, only to discover much darker secrets in a nightmare experience.

Silver Pines is a 2.5D horror game with narrative-driven gameplay that combines a stunning art style with beautiful atmospheric vibes.

This game goes to show that not all horror games need to be in first-person mode with realistic graphics to deliver a memorable adventure.

10. DIVE or DIE – Children of Rain

  • Release Date: July 21, 2026

Dive or Die is another creative game for the Lovecraftian horror fans who also enjoy a bit of RPG in a spooky experience.

In this 2D-style title, you play as a diver who has to dive deep into a scary sea full of weird monsters and horrors to gather resources and upgrade your gear as well as your camp, which also includes managing and deciding the fate of the people in this camp.

The game also features a timer where you get just 40 days to find all the relics in the deep sea before a flood that wipes out everything.

11. Shift At Midnight

Shift At Midnight is a horror game that you can play with your friends to get scared together.

In this game, you play the role of a gas station manager on a night shift. You must stock the shelves and accept deliveries. The only problem is that some of the customers are not human.

You can play the game solo, and it even has a story mode with 13 shifts to get you all spooked up. Playing co-op with friends to manage the gas station together will offer the most fun.

A free demo is available for Shift At Midnight, and it will likely be released very soon, yet no release date has been specified.

12. Vermin

  • Release Date: 2027?

Vermin is a survival horror game with a unique gameplay system where you get to set traps to capture and hunt creepy creatures.

You use the creatures you capture to feed and mutate your body, allowing you to unlock new abilities and explore new areas.

The game also features a scavenging system where you have to loot items and resources to survive.

Vermin still doesn’t have a specific release date, but it will likely be out in 2027.
