By I love the vibe and feel of the STALKER games. I’m yet to find another game with a similar post-apocalyptic world full of anomalies and weird creatures.
After finishing the trilogy, I craved more STALKER, so I went searching for other games similar to STALKER or at least come close to it.
In this list, I’m sharing some of those games I’ve found to be quite impressive. These are the best games like STALKER you can play to get a similar feel of the STALKER universe.
While all these games share some features and worlds similar to STALKER, most of them are different in many ways. So don’t expect them all to be exactly like STALKER.
1. STALKER GAMMA
I’m kind of cheating by including this game in the list because STALKER GAMMA is actually a community-developed mod/expansion for the original STALKER games. But this has grown so big that GAMMA can be considered an entirely new game right now.
STALKER GAMMA is like a compilation of all the original STALKER games, but with a ton of improvements and content on top of it. This game not only features enhanced visuals, but it also has completely new survival elements, weapons, crafting, and so much more, thanks to mods.
If you’ve ever wished there was a STALKER game with sandbox-style exploration and survival elements, GAMMA should be your top pick.
The best part is that STALKER GAMMA is completely free to install and play. It does involve a complex installation process, though. But you can skip that if you own the original STALKER games on the GOG platform.
2. STALZONE
I have a love/hate relationship with STALZONE (previously STALCRAFT), but still it’s one of the best STALKER-inspired games out there.
STALZONE is a STALKER-themed MMO with Minecraft-style blocky character models. The entire game started with Minecraft-style blocky graphics; it later changed to more realistic visuals.
In this game, you can progress through the map to access different areas by leveling up your character. There are tons of quests in this game and even more grinding for farming resources, which are required for unlocking weapons and gear.
I love the core gameplay loop of STALZONE, especially grinding for weapons and artifact hunting. The only thing I hate about the game is the forced PVP, which often makes me rage-quit the game. But somehow I always come back to this game.
3. Chernobylite
Chernobylite is the closest thing you get to a STALKER clone. This game basically copies everything about the STALKER universe and tries to do its own thing with it. And it’s not bad either.
Chernobylite also has some basic survival and crafting elements that are similar to Fallout as well. This combination of mechanics inspired by STALKER and Fallout gives Chernobylite a very unique and weird identity.
Chernobylite feels a bit rough at times, and some mechanics feel out of place. But overall, it’s a decent title that certainly deserves more recognition than it received.
One cool thing worth mentioning is that this game is designed with a 3D-scanned map of the actual Chornobyl zone.
4. Fallout 76
Fallout is the closest franchise for getting a similar feeling to STALKER games. While the post-apocalyptic world of Fallout games is different, it has all the core aspects of the STALKER games.
Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, and Fallout 4 are great games to get immersed in the series of games, if you don’t mind the slightly outdated graphics and compatibility issues. But for STALKER fans, I recommend diving into Fallout 76.
Fallout 76 is an MMO-style open world game with a giant map that you can explore at any pace you want. It’s filled with weird creatures, vaults full of loot, and tons of interesting quests.
Since Fallout 76 is an online multiplayer game, it also has group events. You can even build a base, setup a shop, and sell stuff to other players.
5. Metro Series
STALKER and Metro games have a lot of similarities. The main one is that the developers of both games come from Ukraine; as a result, they are heavily inspired by the Chornobyl events.
All of the Metro games released so far are incredible and have fantastic story campaigns. The games have a unique horror vibe unlike any other I’ve experienced before. I especially loved the small and claustrophobic environments in the first two games of the series.
However, unlike STALKER games, Metro games don’t have open-world environments. And that’s the only thing that might turn you away from these games. Metro Exodus, however, features much larger and explorable environments that give you a sense of an open world map.
Metro is getting a sequel in 2027 as well.
6. Active Matter
Active Matter is a PVPVE extraction shooter game in a STALKER-inspired world. This game has weird creatures, unique gravity-defying anomalies, and bodycam-style gameplay that comes together to offer an immersive experience.
The weapons and gunplay in this game are quite good. When blended with the realistic graphics, it truly feels like you are actually exploring this world. There are some weird anomalies in Active Matter that will amaze you.
If you’re like me and don’t like PVP, Active Matter has a dedicated PVE mode where you can enjoy hunting and looting without having to worry about getting killed by other players.
7. Scavland
If you don’t mind the top-down perspective view and the pixel-style graphics, Scavland is the perfect STALKER alternative that comes with all the best features from the iconic series.
Scavland is basically a STALKER game with a top-down view. It features similar anomalies, factions, creatures, and more that offer the same STALKER vibe. The game does have a few of its own unique features, like the mist that envelops the map.
Questing is quite engaging in Scavland, and the weapons and gunplay feel fun despite the top-down perspective. Given it’s in early access, the game feels a bit rough around the edges, but it shows a ton of potential.
8. ZERO Sievert
ZERO Sievert is another game that is similar to Scavland, in fact, this game could be the inspiration for Scavland, as ZERO Sievert came way before that game.
ZERO Sievert also features a top-down perspective with pixel-style graphics. This game, however, is an extraction shooter game that features a procedurally generated world. Every time you go out to hunt and loot, the map will look different.
ZERO Sievert has extensive weapon, gear, and loot variations as well as deep weapon customizations. There are lots of quests and factions to join as well.
ZERO Sievert 2 is also in the works, and it shows much more promise than the first game. It’s worth keeping an eye for that one.
9. DayZ
The post-apocalyptic world of DayZ is different from the STALKER games. It doesn’t have anomalies, artifacts, or strange creatures. Instead, it’s full of zombies.
However, DayZ offers a highly addictive and engaging gameplay experience close to what you get from STALKER games. The exploration and looting aspect of the game especially feels similar to STALKER.
DayZ is another multiplayer survival game where PVP takes center stage. Thankfully, this game has servers dedicated to PvE-only players. And there are mods you can use to create unique experiences as well.
10. SurrounDead
SurrounDead is an indie game that has great potential. This game features blocky-style graphics but offers a sandbox-style world where you can explore and hunt zombies on your own terms.
What I loved the most about this game is the grind for loot. There’s an abundance of loot throughout the entire map, and it offers lots of ways for you to upgrade your gear and take on bigger enemies to get a sense of progression.
SurrounDead is still in early access, so it doesn’t have a ton of content yet, but in terms of gameplay, it’s quite addictive and enjoyable.
11. Dying Light
Dying Light is another game set in a post-zombie apocalypse world. This is one of my all-time favorite survival horror games that just never goes out of style.
The first-person perspective and the weapon combat system in this game is quite unmatched. The body dismemberment is another cool feature that makes chopping down zombies quite fun.
While it’s not set in an anomalous zone, both Dying Light 1 and 2 games offer a highly immersive post-apocalyptic world. Especially the urban setting with parkour abilities makes every session of the game exciting and fun to play.
12. Project Zomboid
Project Zomboid is one of the most brutal survival games out there. It features a top-down view with deep survival mechanics. And it’s perfect if liked the survival elements of the STALKER games.
This game features massive maps full of zombies. Your goal is to find resources and survive as long as you can. Even a tiny scratch from a zombie is enough to get infected, and it will kill you. And when you die, there’s no respawn. You have to start over.
This game is very difficult, but that also makes it exciting, as it will have you second-guessing your every move.
