Like in many other farming games, you get a set of tools to work with in Dreamlight Valley. They are called “The Royal Tools”.
Upgrading these tools is important to boost progress in the game.
In the beginning, you can only do a minimum amount of work with those tools. In order to maximize their abilities, you need to upgrade them.

Royal Tools
In Dreamlight Valley, mainly you have 3 royal tools. They are,
- Pickaxe
- Watering Can
- Shovel
In order to acquire these royal tools, you need to complete the quest “The Royal Tools” given by Merlin.
Apart from that, you have a fishing rod and camera. The fishing rod can get with from the Peaceful Meadow and you need to make it better with Goofy.
How To Upgrade Tools
In many other farming games, you need to collect some resources to upgrade a certain tool. For example, in Stardew valley, you need Iridium bars and money to upgrade your hoe into an iridium hoe.
But in Dreamlight Valley, You need to complete some quests to upgrade your tools. Let me show you how.
1. How To Upgrade Pickaxe
There are 3 upgrades related to Pickaxe.
1. Upgrade With Maui
First, you need to unlock the Moana Relam to bring Maui to the Valley. It costs only 3000 Dreamlights to unlock the Moana Realm. Bring Moana to the Valley and by completing her quests you can bring Maui too.
Then you need to level up the friendship with Maui until it reaches into level 4.
To increase the friendship with anyone, you can have a daily discussion, bring their favorite gifts, hang out with them, and gifting gems, flowers would be enough.
When you reach level 4 of the friendship with Maui, the quest “A Tale of Stone and Fire” will be started. Once you completed that, your pickaxe will be upgraded and you can remove the large sea debris that looks like large blue stones.
2. Upgrade With Elsa
As the second upgrade of your pickaxe, you need to unlock the Frozen Realm and bring Anna and Elsa to the Valley. To unlock this realm, you need 4000 Dreamlights.
Once you completed the “Welcoming Elsa” quest, the “Breaking the Ice” quest will be started. Here, you need to upgrade the pickaxe to remove the ice which is blocking the entrance of the Ice Cavern in the Forest of Valor.
After you completed this quest, your pickaxe can remove the small ice blocks.
The third upgrade, which is also related to Elsa, is very important. You need to level up the friendship with Elsa until level 6.
After you reached level 6, “The Singing Ice” quest will be started. After you completed that, your pickaxe will be upgraded and you can remove the large ice blocks in the Frosted Heights.
2. How To Upgrade Shovel
To upgrade the Royal Shovel, you need two characters. They are Anna and Scar.
1. Upgrade With Anna
As we discussed earlier, you need to unlock the Frozen Realm and bring Anna to the Valley.
Then you need to level up the friendship with Anna until level 2. After that, the “An Icy Invitation” quest will be started.
Here, you need to upgrade your pickaxe to remove the tree stumps of the Forest of Valor to bring Elsa to the Valley. Once you completed the quest, your pickaxe can remove tree stumps too.
2. Upgrade With Scar
The character scar is not from a realm. You need to unlock the Sunlit Plateau to bring the Scar. It will cost 7000 Dreamlights.
After you completed “The Curse” Quest of Mother Gothel, the Mammoth Skull in Sunlit Plateau will be opened. This skull is the place where Scar is lived.
Then you need to level up your friendship with this tough guy, until level 4. At level 4, “The Breaking Bones” quest will be unlocked.
In this quest, you need to upgrade your shovel with the Lion’s clow shovel head. At the end of the quest, your shovel is ready for removing the bones in Sunlit Plateau.
3. How To Upgrade Watering Can
To upgrade your watering can, you need to level up your friendship with Merlin.
As we discussed earlier, you need to level up with those characters and you will get a quest to upgrade those tools. Commonly, you can get those quests at the earliest stages of friendship.
But, to upgrade the watering can, you need to level up the friendship with Merlin until level 8.
1. Upgrade With Merlin
First, you need to level up your friendship with Merlin. In level 8, the “A Dark Experiment” Quest will be started.
At the end of this quest, your watering can is upgraded to remove the small mushroom lots.
At friendship level 10, “The Final Trial” quest Merlin will be started. Again, your watering can is upgraded o remove the larger mushroom blocks that blocked the bridges in the Glade of Trust.

Upgrading your tools is not a very easy task. But if you can be a little bit patient and level up your friendship with these characters, you can do it.
