Whether you’re a fan of MMOs like Runescape, World of Warcraft, Path of Exile, or even Destiny 2, there’s an offline alternative to all those genres and more on this list.

I love playing MMOs. That feeling of being surrounded by other players while I do my quests and activities is quite amazing.

But there are times I hate playing them. Especially when servers get full and I have to wait in queues or when my days of progress get wiped due to an update.

So I recently went on a search for single player MMOs that I can play completely offline. These are single player games that play like MMORPGs and they don’t require you to be connected to the Internet to play them.

There’s no PVP, no waiting in queues, no server issues, or game-breaking updates. These games will help you relax and just play anytime you want while also getting those dopamine hits from the MMO-like gameplay.

1. Erenshor

erenshor

Erenshor is the perfect World of Warcraft offline alternative.

Erenshor is a single player game developed to look and feel just like playing an MMORPG. It features the same classic design of games like World of Warcraft and has questing and combat similar to Runescape.

This game does a great job of making you feel like playing an MMORPG, all the while satisfying your drive for questing, loot, and leveling a character.

2. Black Grimoire: Cursebreaker

black grimoire

Black Grimoire is often referred to as the offline Runescape alternative.

Black Grimoire is a game crafted by Runescape players like you and me who are tired of paying expensive subscription fees. Games are not meant to be rented; they are meant to be owned by players.

Runescape is a pretty cool game. Too bad it has that pesky subscription. Thankfully, Black Grimoire will help you scratch that old Runescape itch.

It features the same style of questing, leveling, and progression as Runescape. For only a one-time price, with no subscriptions.

3. Dragon’s Dogma 1 & 2

dragons dogma

If you’re a fan of Black Desert Online and Elder Scrolls Online, Dragon’s Dogma is one of the best offline alternatives you could find.

As a huge BDO fan, I felt a similar feeling playing Dragon’s Dogma 2. It has beautiful graphics with great character models.

One thing I love about BDO is fashion. And that is also possible (to some extent) in Dragon’s Dogma 2, which allows you to stylize your character and your pawns (companions) with cool cosmetic items.

Combat, leveling, and progression are also very satisfying in Dragon’s Dogma 2. I haven’t played Dragon’s Dogma 1, but it also lives on the same level, except for slightly outdated graphics.

4. Kingdoms of Amalur Re-Reckoning

Kingdoms of Amalur_ Re-Reckoning visuals

Kingdoms of Amalur Re-Reckoning is the remastered version of the original game. It features fun questing and character leveling that’s quite similar to classic MMOs like Guild Wars 2.

Guild Wars 2 is one of the few MMOs that are still fun to play. But I couldn’t get into its combat system, which felt repetitive. Kingdoms of Amalur Re-Reckoning is a great alternative that fixes that problem.

This game has a great combat system and open-world style exploration. Questing is also enjoyable. It feels old and outdated at times, but the game is fun nonetheless.

5. X4: Foundations

X4 Foundations

If you’re trying to beat your addiction to space MMOs like Eve Online and Star Citizen and their money dumps, X4 is the game you should check out right now.

X4 Foundations is a massive single player space simulation game that features multiple storylines, spaceship battles, and tons of activities to enjoy.

X4 Foundations is also quite sophisticated, just like EVE, and will have you opening multiple tabs, navigating Excel sheets, and keeping notepads.

X4 is also being actively updated and improved by its developers. So even though it’s an old game, the game is in a great state right now.

6. Skyrim

skyrim

Skyrim is the obvious choice for fans of Elder Scrolls Online. Since ESO is based on the Skyrim universe, you’ll feel right at home in Skyrim.

Of course, if you’re a fan of the Elder Scrolls universe, this game doesn’t need an introduction. Skyrim features the same style of questing, combat, and leveling experience you’ll get in ESO.

With modding, you can also expand this game beyond your dreams by adding more quests, graphics overhauls, and so much more.

7. V Rising

v rising

V Rising is a unique top-down RPG that allows you to become a vampire and build your empire. This game features a combination of ARPG and survival mechanics to offer an engaging experience.

V Rising has a fully offline mode where you can play alone and build your base in peace. There’s also an online multiplayer mode.

It has similar gameplay mechanics to ARPGs but with a cool twist. As a vampire, you thrive in the night. During the daytime, you can only travel the map by sticking to the shadows.

8. Wayfinder

wayfinder

Wayfinder is a looter-shooter style game that lets you grind for loot, unlock characters, work on cool weapon builds, and more.

Wayfinder went through several revamps and changes over the years. And the devs finally decided to make it an offline RPG, rather than making a live-service game chasing microtransactions.

Wayfinder feels like a solid game right now and it will bring back memories from games like Guild Wars with its colorful graphics and art style.

9. Grim Dawn

grim dawn

Grim Dawn is a great, single player replacement for Path of Exile and Diablo 4.

This game has been the go-to choice among ARPG veterans as the GOAT of all time. Grim Dawn delivers a phenomenal experience at only one-time price and zero microtransactions.

If you can tolerate the slightly outdated graphics and sounds, you can easily get hundreds of hours worth of gameplay from Grim Dawn, thanks to its endless build combinations and multiple expansions full of content.

10. Valheim

valheim

Valheim is ideal for anyone looking to escape from survival MMOs.

This game delivers a very engaging open world for you to explore on your own terms while leveling your character, upgrading gear, and building your base.

Valheim can be played offline or co-op with friends. The unique art style and the sandbox style gameplay make this game stand out from the crowd.

11. Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley deserves a mention on the list for its massive MMO-style world and the endless content value it brings.

Just like in an MMO, you can play Stardew Valley however you like. You can become a farmer, go fishing, do mining, focus on completing quests, romance NPCs, get married, and so much more.

With its cute pixel art style and soothing soundtracks, Stardew Valley is the perfect chill game to relax after a long day. It’s also available everywhere on PC, consoles, and mobile devices.

12. Borderlands 3

borderlands 3 amara

If you’re looking for a looter-shooter fix similar to Destiny 2 or Warframe, Borderlands 3 is the game you need to check out.

In Borderlands 3, you will get even more loot to farm, builds to work on, and tons of guns to play around with.

Borderlands is the game that invented the looter-shooter genre. First two games in the series are also great and has a great story. The third title has better loot and gunplay.

Borderlands 4 is also available but it’s riddled with performance issues so better wait a while before playing it.
